About the Teacher

Education: I received my Bachelor's degree in Education in 2003 from the University of Mississippi.  Later, while teaching, I earned a Master's of Education degree, again from the University of Mississippi, in 2009.

Experience: I began my years of teaching as an assistant.  I worked at Southaven Elementary in Kindergarten and Second Grade while I completed my Bachelor's degree in Education.  Upon graduation, I became a First Grade teacher at Hernando Elementary, where I taught for three years.  In 2006, Hernando Hills Elementary opened its doors, and I transferred there as the Librarian, after obtaining my Library Media Specialist endorsement.  During my time at HHES, I completed my Master's degree.  After opening and teaching in the library at HHES for four years, I became a Stay-at-Home Mom.  During this time I helped at my two sons' preschool and served as the Vice President of the PTA at Hernando Elementary.  In the fall of 2018, I returned to the First Grade classroom at HES.

Bio: My husband, Nick, and I live in Hernando and love the community here.  We have been married for 20 years, and have two sons, Griffin (13), and Dominick (11).  Nick works for Kellogg's and we attend Hernando First Presbyterian Church.  Our boys keep us very busy.  They each love sports and are very social.

I love to travel, read, and share family time.

Teaching is my lifelong passion.  I love to see little ones learning and growing.  First grade is an amazing year to watch as students begin their school journeys, advancing to read, write, and solve problems on their own.  My goal is to nurture each child and instill a love of learning.

Classroom Management Plan

Our classroom rules are:

  1) Listen when someone is talking.

  2) Follow directions the first time they are given.

  3) Treat everyone with kindness and respect.

  4) Take care of our school and classroom.

  5) Work and play safely and quietly.

  6) It’s ok to make mistakes.

If a rule is broken, a student will move a clothes pin clip with his or her name on it on a chart in our room.  The chart contains these degrees, defined by color:

  1)  Green—Ready to Learn (Student had a great day)

  2)  Yellow—Think About It (Given a warning)

  3)  Orange—Teacher’s Choice (Privilege is taken away as a consequence)

  4)  Red—Parent/Office Contact  (Administrators and/or Guardians contacted)

To promote positive behavior, students will be given rewards.  These include:

  1)  Verbal praise

  2)  Happy notes and/or calls home

  3)  Stickers

  4)  Candy

  5)  Treasure Box prizes—These prizes will be given on Friday afternoons.  Throughout the week, students can earn “tickets” for good behaviors.  On Fridays, those tickets can be redeemed for prizes.  Each prize costs 5 tickets.

The students can also earn whole-group class awards.  Each time they are given praise from another teacher, parent, or administrator, a letter within the word COMPLIMENTS will be written on the board.  When the word is completely spelled out, the class will receive a prize like popsicles, popcorn, extra recess, and other fun opportunities.
